Women’s out-of-date cosmetic bag is a breeding ground for bacteria

The fact that women use their cosmetics till they run out of it, cannot be denied by anybody, not even women themselves. But this is not something to be particularly proud of, as the habit of hoarding cosmetics beyond their expiry date could lead to a lot of health hazards. An average make-up bag is a hoarding place for make-up that is four years out of date, according to research. The old mascara wands can breed bacteria that lead to conjunctivitis, redness, itching and swelling, while old lipsticks could cause dry, irritated and blistered lips. Dirty brushes (which women don’t wash in a lifetime) are breeding grounds for micro-organisms that can cause herpes, ringworm, and impetigo, an infectious disease that causes blisters. EU regulations require manufacturers of cosmetics to include ‘period after opening’ and expiry dates which are often neglected by women because of their small sizes.

During the survey conducted by Debenhams, 68% of women confessed to have replaced make-up till they run out, no matter how long it lasts and another 72% admitted to never washing make-up sponges or brushes. Spokesperson Sara Stern concluded by quoting, “Beauty is timeless, but products are not.” which, I believe, should be endorsed and represented on all beauty products to discourage women from using outdated products.
