Eco-friendly wedding dress dissolves in water

dress.jpgA wedding gown happens to be the most treasured piece of clothing in a woman’s life. So why in the world would anyone want it to be made out of garment that can be dissolved into water? That simply seems bizarre. Fashion and engineering students at Sheffield Hallam University have developed a wedding dress, which can be transformed into five new fashion pieces with this type of garment. If you decide to wear this eco friendly wedding dress, you might have to carry an umbrella in your hand instead of flowers if it happens to be a rainy day. The dress has polyvinyl alcohol, a biodegradable substance that is used in laundry bags and washing detergents, knitted into the fabric. This assists it to be dissolved into water without harming the environment. The students wanted to challenge the notion that a wedding dress should only be used once and aimed to explore modern society’s attitudes towards throwaway fashion,” said Jane Blohm, a fashion lecturer. “The wedding gown is perhaps one of the most symbolic garments in (a woman’s) wardrobe and represents the challenges of ‘throwaway fashion’.”

I can’t understand why anyone would want a throw away wedding gown, it has far too much sentimental value. However, this heir creation is to be featured in an forthcoming exhibition, titled, a Sustainable Marriage, which will be shown at the university later this month.
