We have been hearing about Ikea’s new product, the Uppleva TV, for a while now. Ikea are doing a good job to create the right kind of buzz for its product. They have kept the details to themselves, but are slowly releasing some exciting features. The latest news is that this amazing product will feature apps for some of the biggest video sites. This means that users of Uppleva will be able access videos from YouTube, Vimeo, Dailymotion among many other sites. Besides these, services like QTom and TuneIn radio will also be available. They are including various apps, which will perform functions like music playback, games, VOD, and catch-up video playback. According to the spokesperson, there will be around 20 different apps per country! The Uppleva TV will include an integrated Blu-ray player and a wireless subwoofer.

Ikea’s new Uppleva TV will be released in sizes between 24 inches to 46 inches. It is releasing in some European countries by next month, but it is expected to reach the US shores only sometime in 2013. There is no word out on pricing yet, but it is expected to start around $960.

This year’s CES has some pretty interesting Smartphone prototypes, among which the “speakerless Smartphone” was something that caught our attention. The same prototype design from KDDI and Kyocera stressed on tissue conduction rather than a typical Smartphone speaker, which is great for the hearing impaired or for using in loud public places. Kyocera as the Urbano Progresso smartphone with Android 4.0 on board now offers the technology dubbed as “Smart Sonic Receiver”. The Smartphone functions on a dual-core Snapdragon MSM8655 1.4GHz processor and comes with 4GB of on-board space. It is equipped with a 8.1 MP camera that shoots 720p videos. It is also enabled with an NFC chip and is designed for the domestic market with Japanese features such as 1seg TV Tuner, infrared, water and dust proofing and Osaifu Keitai (wallet phone for making purchases).

The Kyocera Urbano Progresso has a 4.0-inch OLED screen and 1500mAh battery life. With the set of features typical to the Japanese markets, it is unlikely that the phone will have great demand in the markets outside. The Smartphone is slated to launch sometime towards the end of May.

Most of us live our lives on Facebook, Twitter, and other social networking sites. However, when you are trying to get some work done, those constant beeps, dings and pings alerting you to updates can get quite annoying. This is where Olly, the perfume spraying robot comes in. Benjamin Redford invented the robot named Olly who closely monitors social networks and alerts you when your name is mentioned. So, every time you get mentioned, liked, tweeted about or retweeted, this enterprising robot let out a whiff of perfume as a “reward”. The best part of the device is that the scent can be customized to your preferences. Therefore, you won’t have to suffer some horrible flowery scent. They have even tested a vomit scented prototype – is that is more your thing! The device has a little drawer in the back, which you can fill with a scent of your liking. Redford recommends essential oils as they come in a variety of flavors! They feel that this is a good way to reward, as smell is pleasant, and less distracting than sounds.

Unfortunately, Olly is not commercially available yet. However, you can make Olly yourself using a 3D printer and off the shelf parts. They have listed detailed instructions on their website. Olly is expected to be available by the second half of the year.

Chocolate sculpture of a Mayan Temple is the world’s largest at 18,000 pounds

Just months, after the World’s largest chocolate slab was unveiled in Thornton, Chocolatiers in Chichen Itza in Mexico have broken the world record by creating a mouth-watering edible sculpture of an ancient Mayan temple. The replica of the Kukulcan pyramid weighs a whopping 18,239 pounds- the equivalent of two elephants, smashing previously set record by a chocolate creation from Italy weighing 10,736.5 pounds. The incredible chocolate replica of the ancient temple measuring six feet tall and 10ft by 10ft wide, took about 400 hours to make for staff at Qzina Specialty Foods in Irvine, California. The delicious temple was made by the Qzina Institute of Chocolate & Pastry in order to celebrate its 30th anniversary and their choosing the Mayan theme accorded to the crucial role that the culture played in the origins of the chocolate. The intricately carved structure has been carefully crafted to have all the elements that the real 1100-year old temple has, such as 365 steps as depicted in the Mayan Calendar.

The Chocolate sculpture has been built proportionally to the ancient temple’s true size and exactly one-thirtieth the size. The temple will be available to view from June until it is destroyed on December 21, 2012 when the Mayan Calendar ends.
