Japanese master the art of glamorising mobile phones!

Call it over-the-top, kitsch, or a new art form, love it or hate it but you cannot ignore the dolled up mobile phones, definitely not if you are in Tokyo. You shouldn’t be surprised at all to feel like an outcast if you are using your mobile phone just the way you got it in that sealed box. That’s a definite no-no in Tokyo where dressing up your phone could well be as imperative as dressing yourself. Deco-den has become a rage in Japan and has been decorating mobile phones since 1998. In 2003 and 2005, they became slightly popular, and this year there has been a wave of demand for decorated mobiles. There are embellished with the use of decorative wrappers that are more like adhesive sheets with designs printed on one side that stick right onto the mobile. But nothing beats my favourite rhinestones. They look absolutely stunning and I would love to go for one any day anytime.

What made me cringe though were the very loud, garish and gaudy 3D decorations. Imagine a phone that is covered with a faux-slice of cake topped with whipped cream and cherries! That’s so whatever but hats off to the Japanese who are hell bent on making this fad omnipresent and by the looks of it…its here to stay! With each phone looking better than the other you wouldn’t know what to choose. The crux is your phone is naked till you go the Japanese way!
