Japanese University provide free iPhone to keep a watch on students

The Japanese are oh-so-particular about their decades of track record for maintaining academic excellence and technological advancement, that they are doling out mobile phones to students in order to keep it going. Ayokama Gakuin, a Tokyo based university is offering free iPhone to students in the School of Social Informatics, but mind you, the plan isn’t proposed to spoil them. Rather, it is intended to take away their freedom by using it as a tracking device to monitor student presence on campus, in order to prevent cheating during roll calls.

The other ‘petty’ functions are for using it for digital broadcasts (podcast), home work and taking tests. It is still surprising to know that the iPhone is ‘free’ in Japan and the university can afford to cover the basic fee with limited downloading, that too at times of recession! Nevertheless, the world would be a better place if this kind of access and empowerment were provided to every kid!
