As layoffs surge, women emerge survivors
|

Here are some great stats that might appeal to women’s lib and other societies. The proportion of women who are working has changed very little since the recession started. But a full 82 percent of the job losses have befallen men, who are heavily represented in distressed industries like manufacturing and construction. The reason could be attributed to the choice of career. Since women usually opt for careers in education and health care, which are less sensitive to economic ups and downs, they have been spared the axe during this time of recession. Economists have predicted before that women would one day dominate the labor force as more ventured outside the home. A deep and prolonged recession, therefore, may change not only household budgets and habits; it may also challenge longstanding gender roles. A shocking role reversal, it will definitely boost the morale of many women.
But let this piece of news not go to your head ladies. No job is safe in this time of recession and it is time we pull up our socks and prepare to face the challenges.
