Barbie celebrates her 50th birthday at New York Fashion Week
Barbie is no ordinary celebrity and that is why it came as no surprise when the fashion industry’s big names came together to celebrate her 50th birthday. Yes, the beautiful doll that only grows younger with age had a special fashion show on her special day. And fifty-one designers, including many household names such as Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, Tommy Hilfiger, Diane Von Furstenberg and the London-based red carpet specialists, Marchesa, made specially-designed outfits for the special occasion. Opening with a big bang, the show charmed all with its visual biography of the Barbie story complete with a pink dream home and pink Corvette convertible, and flashed onto a heart monitor beeping into action to signal the doll was coming to life. The New York Fashion Week audience was treated to retro affair as curtains opened to reveal, a model dressed as the very first Barbie. Even “Ken” made an appearance, in a black velvet jacket and jeans. Several mothers and daughters who were present in the audience along with the press and buyers cheered this extraordinary collection presented by 51 different models.
A great day for Barbie and her fans, it only showed her undying fan following. But the celebrations don’t end here; the 50th anniversary promotion will now be celebrated at London Fashion Week, which opens next Friday. Look out world, here comes the young and beautiful Barbie!
