Dubai Employs Pink Taxis Only For Women

Dubai’s RTA has certainly been inspired by the Pinkladies of UK! I think it is a good idea that the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has initiated the new pink taxi for women in Dubai. It is not only comfortable but also safe, especially at night when there's no other public transport available. I often encounter rude male drivers at night, when I return home after work. Taxis with pink roofs, pink seats as well as interiors and other features give the vehicles a feminine touch. These feminine taxis will have female drivers and they'll be helpfully deployed outside the places women frequent, such as shopping malls and maternity hospitals. They will only pick up female passengers, or women with young children. There is a fleet of 50 of the pink-roofed taxis driven about by 100 women drivers.

Currently taxis with female drivers operate at Dubai International Airport to ferry female passengers and families and there are about 30 female drivers including 10 nationals working for the airport taxi service. However I wonder if women-only taxicabs are really the solution to gender discrimination?
